Soda Mountains

America’s Best Idea and America’s Worst Idea Collide at the Soda Mountains!

Act Now: Protect the Soda Mountains for Future Generations! Support the designation of a Soda Mountains Area of Critical Environmental Concern!
The Soda Mountain Solar project deserves the nickname, “The worst of the worst” renewable energy projects proposed in the California desert because it would jeopardize efforts to reestablish connectivity between populations of bighorn sheep; harm habitat for desert tortoise, kit fox and burrowing owls, endanger resident and migratory birds that utilize the nearby wetlands at Zzyzx; destroy scenic vistas from the Mojave National Preserve and impair air quality at the nearby Desert Studies Center.
Not only does the proposed project encroach on the boundaries of the Mojave National Preserve (approximately ¼ mile away), but it undermines the Department of Interior’s own initiative for thoughtful, landscape -level planning for renewable energy projects.
I’m appealing to my listeners today to take immediate action and sign onto a very important, time sensitive proposal to create a Soda Mountains Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) to protect this area’s significant natural resources! The bottom line is that America’s best ideas are the national parks like the Mojave National Preserve and they should not be harmed by “The worst of the worst” renewable energy developments like Bechtel’s Soda Mountain Solar project.soda mountain solar map
Please sign onto the Soda Mountains ACEC support letter by sending your name, title, business (if applicable) and city and state to Seth Shteir (sshteir@npca.org) . Also, take a moment to e-mail California State BLM Director Jim Kenna, National BLM Director Neil Kornze and Deputy Secretary of the Interior Mike Connor and let them know you want this area protected and this misguided proposal stopped once and for all.
Dear California State BLM Director Kenna, National BLM Director Kornze and Deputy Secretary of the Interior Mike Connor:
The Soda Mountain Solar project deserves its nickname- “The worst of the worst” renewable energy proposals in the California desert because of its significant adverse impacts to bighorn sheep, desert tortoise, kit fox, burrowing owl, avian species, groundwater resources, air quality and the scenic vistas of the Mojave National Preserve.
Not only does the proposed project encroach on the boundaries of the Mojave National Preserve (approximately ¼ mile away), but it undermines the Department of Interior’s own initiative for thoughtful, landscape -level planning for renewable energy projects.
Please do the right thing and protect the natural resources of the Soda Mountain area in perpetuity by designating a Soda Mountain Area of Critical Environmental Concern, selecting the “No Action” alternative for the environmental process and relocating it to an area without significant impacts to desert ecosystems, archaeological resources, communities and recreational interests.
